Crayons vs Oil Pastels
When it comes to colours and painting, the medium you choose can make or break your artwork. The right colours not only define your style but also reflects your imagination on the canvas.
Crayons and oil pastels are two of the most common mediums used worldwide by amateur and professional artists alike. The main difference between the two comes from the binder used with the pigments. Crayons are made with a wax binder whereas oil pastels, use a mixture of non-drying oil and wax.
Here’s a much more detailed list of the differences between crayons and oil pastels. Drawing
When it comes to achieving sharp lines, crayons definitely take the prize, in comparison to oil pastels. Crayon colours are smudge-free and are great to make quick sketches. This would be a mighty task with oil pastels as they are extremely creamy.
Mixing
Although, this texture of mixing comes to use when you want to blend and layer your colours. Crayons are stubborn colours; the pigments hold character and takes a lot of effort to create the illusion of blending. Oil pastels have free-flowing colours that mingle well with each other and requires little pressure to make strokes and fill.
Vibrancy
This brings us to colour saturation. The obvious answer is oil pastels. Oil pastels are more vibrant and fully saturated when compared to crayons. Crayons don’t have the ability to glide on surfaces as well as oil pastel.
Affordability
If you are a budding artist, the first colour you can freely use, will be crayons. Easily accessible and affordable, crayons are the go-to colours for kids and adults alike. But if you have a little more understanding and control over your style, oil pastels make a great fit. Although they are a little more pricey, when compared to crayons, they are definitely worth every penny.
Surfaces
Oil pastels also have the extra edge that they can be used on multiple surfaces such as canvas, cardboard, glass, wood etc. But crayons are best used on paper as it is not as malleable as oil crayons.
So there you have it, choose your medium wisely!
