What is monochromatic painting?

 

One of the many joys of creating a painting is the free usage of colour. But what if you use just one colour and its tints and shades to create a piece of art? That is what we call monochromatic painting.

The word “monochromatic” means “single color,” so this is a type of art in which the artist uses only one color to create their work. A monochromatic piece can be either monotone or tonal-that is, it can use only shades of one color (monotone) or all variations on a single hue (tonal).

A brief history

Monochromatic paintings have been around since ancient times; they’re thought to have originated with the Egyptians. However, it wasn’t until the 19th century that they became more common in Western art. The French Impressionists were some of the most famous proponents of monochromatic painting, including Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Mediums

Monochromatic paintings are usually made on canvas or paper, but they can also be created by using any other material. Some examples include sculptures and even stained glass windows.

Technique

The technique can be used in almost any medium, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and architecture. Monochromatic paintings are typically considered abstractions because they do not attempt to represent anything realistic or specific; instead, they focus on creating an entirely new image from one color alone. It’s a great way to get started in painting, as it allows you to focus on the techniques of brush strokes and tone.
