Select the right canvas for your painting - Types of Canvases

Choosing a suitable canvas can do wonders for your painting. But what all do you have to consider when purchasing your canvas?

Here’s what you need to understand about the different types of canvases to make an educated choice!

Every canvas is weighed based on a combination of its thickness and the weave of the fabric used.

Stronger and capable of resisting easy wear and tear. Ideal for bigger canvases.

Mostly loose and easy to stretch. It’s great for small paintings and is affordable.

Your choice of fabric can vary depending on your purpose, expertise, and medium.

Strong and lasting, linen is the most popular material used for canvases. It is sturdy and resistant to wear but thick linen is not easy to stretch and is expensive compared to cotton.

A relatively new canvas fabric, cotton is a very cooperative fabric that is easy to stretch and fit onto a frame.

The way every paper has a GSM (grams per square meter), the weave of your canvas is also important to accentuate your artwork.

Ideal for heavy artwork such as oil paintings which require heavy-handed brushwork and durability for the oil to dry.

Best for making portraits, or even impasto paintings which need a stretched canvas for the technique to show.

The foundation of every painting changes the quality of the end result. It changes the glossiness, vibrance, brush strokes, and even the way your pigment develops on the canvas.

Great when you are experimenting on multiple techniques as you can coat your specific primer.

Titanium White-based, this primer helps seal weave holes and creates a barrier making it ideal for all kinds of paintings.

Less absorbent, making it easy to glide your oil paintings while leaving them bright and beautiful.

More absorbent than an acrylic primer, making it ideal for encaustic and tempera paintings.

Less absorbent, this primer keeps the canvas wet, thus allowing more manipulation and layering which is ideal for watercolor paintings.

Be creative and experiment on various primers and canvases to find the right fit for your masterpiece!
