Difference Between Fabric and Acrylic Colour

While painting your t-shirt or bag, what colour would you prefer to select, acrylic or fabric? Some people like to paint with fabric colours, while some with acrylic colours. Everyone has their own choices. However, do you know the difference between fabric and acrylic colours? How do they affect your paintings, and which one is better?

These are some general questions that often trouble beginners. This blog will help you decide which type of colour between fabric and acrylic is better to use.

Overview of Fabric Paint

Fabric paint is the correct choice for dyeing or painting fabrics and clothes. These paints have special binding chemicals that assist the paint in getting stuck with fabrics for a long time. It is a combination of fabric dye and a binder.

However, these colours do not adhere to synthetic fibre as well when compared to natural fibre. Even regular use or multiple washing of fabric colour painted natural fibre do not fade.

Overview of Acrylic Paint

For fast-drying and permanent painting on fabrics, acrylic paints are used. You can apply these colours on both natural as well as synthetic fibres. Although water-soluble, these colours dry within a few minutes after painting. Acrylic paint is formed from acrylic polymer emulsion. It is in the form of pigment.

After applying or drying on canvas or fabric, these colours become water-resistant. Hence, most of the fabric is painted with these colours. These colours seem very bright and vibrant similar to oil painting colours.

Fabrics painted with these paints can be washed by hand and machine.Fabrics painted with these colours need a special mixer medium while washing them.

In A Nutshell

Both Fabric, as well as Acrylic colours are water-resistant when dried up. Ironing or blow drying the fabric after painting can set them on the Fabric for a long time. However, acrylic colours lose their binding ability if they are not properly mixed with a medium mixer under heat in the washing machine. So, based on your requirements, you can use either of the types of colours!
