Since time immemorial, artists have devoted a lot of time and effort to capturing the essence of the human face. The human face is a dynamic structure saturated with emotion and enigma. It is essentially a reflection of your spirit; of who you are and how you want to be perceived. If you are here, then the ability to portray such a complex structure as the human face has probably eluded you. So, let’s get started on the task at hand without further ado!
How to Draw a Realistic Face: A Tutorial
Follow the 8-step guide outlined below to a ‘T’ if drawing the perfect face is what you’re aiming for.
Step 1: Draw a Circle
Draw a wide circle with a horizontal line beneath it to represent the chin. Next, draw the jawline. Make sure both sides are proportional before drawing a vertical line down the middle.
Step 2: Draw contour lines on the face.
You can do this step with or without a ruler.
If using a ruler, position the ruler to parallel your drawing. First, mark the exact length of the face. Next, using your ruler measurements as your guide, mark eight equal spaces. Always begin with the middle line and keep it as your CENTRE LINE. Then, mark the lines below as 1, 2, and 3. Next, mark A and C above, having skipped a line in between. Not to worry, if you practise enough, in no time at all, you will not need a ruler to do this step.
Without a ruler, draw lines in the following sequence: CENTRE LINE, 1, 2, 3 (below) and C, B, A (above) (B is included because when sketching freehand, it is simpler to divide the forehead section in half first.)
Step 3: Draw eyes in the correct spot.
Mark the CENTRAL LINE of the face with four evenly spaced ticks. The eyes will be positioned here. Since eyes are typically slanted, be relaxed about moving slightly above or below the line.
Step 4: Sketch a Realistic Nose
Extend two lines from the inner corners of each eye. These will guide the breadth of the nose. Now we’ve got a box, and it’s time to draw the nose. To begin, place a circle anywhere between lines 1 and 2. A nose with sharp angles will give your face a more sculpted appearance.
Step 5: Add the Eyebrows
To define the brow bone, extend the nose’s arch beyond the eyelids (this step is optional). These should be very thin lines. Shape the eyebrows along the brow bone with a 4B pencil. Note that thick, bushy eyebrows can enhance the masculinity of a face.
Step 6: Draw lips using a triangle.
Draw a vertical line to represent the centre of each eye. This line serves as the outer limit of the lips. Draw a small triangle in the little box under the nose to denote the fullest part of the lips. If you drew the nose much above line 2, stretch the triangle until the tip meets the nose.
Step 7: Add the Ears
The Center Line and Line 2 define the endpoints of each ear.
Step 8: Draw the Hair
Draw the top hairline between lines A and B. The size of the forehead is entirely up to you. Go above line A to depict a thinning hairline. Draw hair from the sides of the head while painting a man’s face to make his hairline appear tough and distinct.
Conclusion
This tutorial is sure to help you draw faces more quickly and easily. Moreover, you will also be able to spot proportional mistakes in older drawings, figure out why some faces appear more realistic than others and create cartoons and caricatures, among other things. Remember to gather the right supplies to make your artistic journey that much more profitable and enjoyable.
